The 2012 Summer Olympics witnessed history as the first double amputee sprinter competed in the able-bodied Olympics. Known as the Blade Runner and the Fastest Man on Zero Legs, the South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius is now also known as a convicted murderer. After Steenkamp died in an incident in their home on Valentine’s Day in 2013, Pistorius was charged with culpable homicide in 2014. After serving one year of his prison sentence, South African prosecutors appealed this conviction and he was found guilty of murder in November of this year. A judge set his $688 bail in light of the fact that Pistorius agreed to remain under house arrest before the sentencing portion of the trial, presenting a low flight risk.
Bail in the U.S. is also set by a judge, in which the judge examines many relevant factors surrounding the charges. The defendant’s past record with the law, the nature of the charges, the defendant’s ties to the community and family, and most importantly, the risk that the defendant will flee before trial.
